Queerying 21st after Pentecost C

Suzannah Porter and Brooke McLain musically queery the RCL readings.

How do we stand the waiting for justice in the face of so much violence?

How does God lead the way through uncertainty?

How can you lift up someone going unnoticed?

How do we need to change to be our best selves?

Rev. Emily E. Ewing queeries the Gospel reading.
ID: A solitary Sycamore tree stands tall and full of green leaves in a grass field.
Gospel: Luke 19:1-10
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. 2A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a ranking Empire collaborator and was rich. 3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus, because he was going to pass that way.

5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” 6So Zacchaeus hurried down and was happy to welcome Jesus.

7All who saw it began to grumble and said, “Jesus has gone to be the guest of one whose work makes them a sinner.”

8Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Leader, “Look, half of my possessions, Leader, I give to the poor; and when I have defrauded anyone of anything, I pay back four times as much.”

9Then Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a child of Abraham. 10For the Human One came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Queeries for the text:
What did we skip?
Where is Jericho?
Who is short?
What is a sycamore like?
How is hospitality imposed? How is it offered?
Who grumbles?
Who is a sinner?
Who gives to the poor and repays four times as much?
What is salvation?
Who is lost?

Queerying Narrative 102

Pace Warfield-May queeries the Narrative Lectionary reading.

Genesis 12:1-9
Now the Becoming One said to Abram, “Go from your country and your people and your parent's house to the land that I will show you. 2I will make a great nation out of your descendants, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

4So Abram went up and left as the Becoming One told him to, and his nephew Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot and all the possessions that they had gathered and the slaves they had stolen from their families in Haran, and they set forth to go to the land of Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, 6Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were native to the land and called it their home. 7Then the Becoming One appeared to Abram and said, “Let's make this destiny manifest–I'll just rob this land from their people and give it to your offspring.” Abram built there an altar to the Becoming One, who had appeared to him. 8From there he moved on to the hill country on the east of Bethel and made camp, between Bethel and Ai, and there he built an altar to the Becoming One, calling out Xyrs name. 9And Abram continued on his journey slowly toward the Negeb.

Queeries for the text:
What is this passage building on?
What is the accompanying reading?
Where is this headed?
Why would God give Abram an already occupied land?
Who else has used the image of God gifting occupied land for their own benefit?
What does it mean to be heirs of a stolen land?

Queerying Reformation B

River Needham, MA ThM queeries the Tanakh reading.

Tanakh: Jeremiah 30:31-34
See, a time is coming—declares the Becoming One—when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors, when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, a covenant which they broke, though I espoused them—declares the Becoming One. But such is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel after these days—declares the Becoming One: I will put My teaching into their inmost being and inscribe it upon their hearts. Then I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No longer will they need to teach one another and say to one another, “Heed the Becoming One”; for all of them, from the least of them to the greatest, shall heed Me—declares the Becoming One.

Queeries for the text:
What possibilities for new covenants exist in the text?
What does it mean to inscribe on the heart?
Who are My people?

Gospel: John 8:31-36
31Then Jesus said to the Jewish people who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

33They answered Jesus, “We are descendants of Abraham and Sarah and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, ‘You will be made free’?”

34Jesus answered them, “Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is enslaved to sin. 35The enslaved person does not have a permanent place in the household; the child has a place there forever. 36So if the Child makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Queeries for the text:
What is Jesus' word?
How is history selective?
Who is enslaved today?
Which children don't have a permanent place in the household?
What could freedom look like?

Lent 2 year C

The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village.[

Periodic queerier, River Needham, and guest queerier, Jessica Davis, queery the Tanakh reading.

Tanakh: Genesis 15:1-12, [13-16], 17-18

Some time later, the word of the Becoming One came to Abram in a vision.
She said, “Fear not, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.”
Then Abram said, “O Becoming God, what can You give me,
seeing that I shall die childless,
and the one in charge of my household is Dammesek Eliezer!”
Abram continued, “Since You have granted me no offspring,
my steward will be my heir.”
The word of the Becoming One came to him in reply,
“That one shall not be your heir;
none but your very own issue shall be your heir.”
She took him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars,
if you are able to count them.”
Then She added, “So shall your offspring be.”
And because he put his trust in the Becoming One, She reckoned it to his merit.
Then She said to him, “I am the Becoming One who brought you out
from Ur of the Chaldeans to assign this land to you as a possession.”
And he said, “O Becoming God, how shall I know that I am to possess it?”
She answered, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat, a three-year-old ram,
a turtledove, and a young bird.”
He brought Her all these and cut them in two, placing each half opposite the other;
but he did not cut up the bird.
Birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. As the sun was about to set, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a great dark dread descended upon him.
[Then She said to Abram, “Know well that your offspring
shall be strangers  in a land not theirs, and
they shall be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years;
but I will execute judgment on the nation
they shall serve, and in the end they shall go free with great wealth.
As for you, You shall go to your ancestors in peace; You shall be buried
at a ripe old age.
And they shall return here in the fourth generation,
for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”]
When the sun set and it was very dark, there appeared a smoking oven,
and a flaming torch which passed between those pieces.
On that day the Becoming One made a covenant with Abram, saying,
“To your offspring I assign this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:..."

Queeries for the text:
Are the Becoming One and the Becoming God the same?
Who else is a steward? How do stewards exist today? What might justice look like for stewards?
What does it mean to count the stars?
What allows Abram to be so forward with demanding things of G-d?
How did Abram carry all the animals? Did he have a pickup truck?
Why was so much of the Becoming One's Covenant omitted from the pericope?
What does it mean for God to give humans land to possess? What does it mean to possess land?
Where did the smoking oven and flaming torch come from? What powers them?

Rev. Emily E. Ewing queeries the Gospel reading.

Gospel: Luke 13:31-35
31At that very hour
some Pharisees came and said to Jesus,
“Get away from here,
for Herod wants to kill you.”
32Jesus said to them,
“Go and tell that fox for me,
‘Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow,
and on the third day I finish my work.
33Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way,
because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’

34“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
the city that kills the prophets
and stones those who are sent to it!
How often have I desired to gather your children together
as a hen gathers her brood under her wings,
and you were not willing!
35See, your house is left to you.
And I tell you,
you will not see me until the time comes when you say,
‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Becoming One.’”

Queeries for the text:
At which hour?  Where was Herod?
Why were Pharisees warning Jesus?
Why would Jesus call Herod a fox?
Have prophets ever been killed outside Jerusalem?
Can Jesus the Hen actually protect the brood from a fox?
Who else is like a mother hen?
When will people say "Blessed is the one..."?  Why?
Why does Jesus leave the house to them?
